NGC 5972 is a lenticular galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Serpens Caput north of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 402 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 120,000 ly. In the same area of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5962 , NGC 5977 , IC 1130 .
The object was discovered on June 29, 1880 by Édouard Jean-Marie Stephan with an 80 cm Foucault reflector at the Observatoire de Marseille .
