The "stumbling block" was relocated on October 23, 2014. It is intended to commemorate the 1160 mentally ill men and women who were sent to their deaths from there in November and December 1939. The men and women were patients in the “Landesheilanstalt Stralsund” on the site of today's Hospital West . The project was initiated by the chief physician of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Harald Freyberger , and the senior physician in charge, Jan Ambruster. The project was supported by Deutsche Bahn and the city of Stralsund. Gunter Demnig laid the threshold .
