The Papestraße in the urban area Old Town in Stralsund connects the road Apollonienmarkt , Judenstraße and Ossenreyerstraße with Badstüberstraße . The filter road , Jacobiturmstraße and Jacobi Choir street cross the street Pape. Papenstrasse is part of the core area of the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Old Towns Stralsund and Wismar .

The street got its name from the name Pape for members of the Christian clergy. Today's Böttcherstraße was also called Papenstraße, from 1446 the street between Filterstraße and Jacobiturmstraße was also called Papenstraße; Until 1530, Böttcherstraße was also called Papenstraße, after which this name was lost and only came to today's Papenstraße. Papenstrasse has been the name of the entire street since 1869, until then the street was divided into sections:

The section between the crossing Ossenreyerstraße / Apollonienmarkt / Judenstraße to Filterstraße was initially called Pumperstraße and was part of a street that ran from Filterstraße via Apollonienmarkt to Mönchstraße . Later, the name Faulenhof came up, which suggests the lazy state of the area. The section between Filterstrasse and Jacobiturmstrasse was called Papenstrasse, at the time when Böttcherstrasse was also known as Papenstrasse, the name Kleine Papenstrasse was also common. The section between Jacobiturmstrasse and Jacobichorstrasse was initially called Bei der Jacobikirche , as it is actually right next to St. Jakobi Church . The section between Jacobichorstrasse and Badstüberstrasse was initially called, around the year 1310, Löwenhagen after the Löwe family resident here; the family provided three councilors of the Hanseatic city with Gerhard Löwe from 1316, Michael Löwe from 1368 and finally Gerhard Löwe from 1369. From around the year 1400, the section was called Mattenhagen , because the mat weavers were based here; The mats made of straw and bast were used as heat protection on stone floors, as a base on rafts , covering material for roofs and also as packaging material.

Three buildings in the street are listed (see also the list of architectural monuments in Stralsund ), namely Papenstrasse 10 , Papenstrasse 25 and Papenstrasse 29 .

One of the buildings on Papenstrasse is the St. Jakobi Church , a former parish church.
