The house with the postal address Alter Markt 3 (including numbers 1 and 2) is a building in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund on the Alter Markt on the corner of Külpstrasse . The house is located in the core area of the city area recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site of the “ historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar ”.
The previous building was the hotel “Zum Goldenen Löwen”. In 1860 Carl Giebel acquired the house for 20,000 Reichstaler; In 1863 he had it added two floors and demolished the porch. In 1865 he also acquired the neighboring building, Alter Markt 2, and had the two buildings merged and a balcony built in front of it. In 1898, Carl Holm acquired the hotel and set up a bar on Külpstrasse. He filed for bankruptcy in 1900 ; in the following years the hotel had many changing owners. In 1937 the hotel was expanded with the new building at Külpstraße 13 ; the facade was made simpler.
Confiscated by the Soviet Army after World War II , the hotel reopened on June 1, 1949.
On July 22nd, 1982 the buildings of the hotel “Zum Goldenen Löwen” at Alten Markt 2-3, Alter Markt 1 and Külpstrasse 14 and 15 were blown up in two stages.
The laying of the foundation stone for today's four- to six-storey building, which was erected in prefabricated construction with indicated gables , was on November 23, 1983. On January 19, 1985 the first apartments were handed over to the tenants. From November 20, 1984, the youth club “Goldener Löwe” was located on the lower floor; the name was reminiscent of the previous building.
After extensive renovation in the early 2000s, the “Goldener Löwe” restaurant was opened on April 5, 2003. There are apartments on the upper floors.
A stumbling stone has been set in the pavement in front of the house since August 25, 2006 , reminding of the former resident Karl Böhm, a merchant who was murdered in Piasky in 1940 (see list of stumbling stones in Stralsund ).
