The house at Marienstraße 3 in Stralsund (2012)

The building with the postal address Marienstraße 3 is a listed building on Marienstraße in Stralsund .

The two-storey plastered building, originally from the 15th century, was rebuilt in the 18th century.

The church of St. Antonius was built here around 1430 . The church building was an elongated brick building with a three-sided choir closure and numerous buttresses . The church belonged to an inn built by Vicko Timme and Jacob Kulemann in 1408 , which was later used as a home for the poor and old people. From this inn the church also received the name Gasthauskirche . During the explosion of a warehouse filled with gunpowder in a powder tower in the Stralsund city wall , near Tribseer Strasse , many surrounding buildings were damaged or destroyed in December 1770; The inn church on Marienstraße was also badly damaged. The surrounding walls of the original church building have been preserved. At that time the church was used by the Swedish military authorities; Stralsund was then part of Sweden .

The military authorities had the building rebuilt and handed it over to the city of Stralsund in 1781. At the instigation of the doctor Bernhard Nicolaus Weigel (1721–1801), the building was converted into a hospital . It started operating in 1784 as the city's first municipal hospital.

During the renovation, ceilings were drawn in and the baroque facade with segmented arched windows, grooved pilaster strips , a strong main cornice and a two-storey volute gable were created.

A garden house on Frankenwall , a former tower of the city wall , also belongs to the property . When the inn church was converted into a hospital, the tower was converted to accommodate patients and used as a smallpox tower from then on . It was later given an extension.

The house is located in the core area of the city area recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site of the “ historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar ”. It is entered in the list of architectural monuments in Stralsund with the number 505.

The building is used as a doctor's practice and a pharmacy . A wooden plaque and a stone inscription on the gable facing Marienstraße remind of its use as a church.
