NGC 5995 is an active spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type Sb in the constellation Leo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 337 million light years from the Milky Way and about 90,000 ly in diameter.

The object was discovered on June 5, 1836 by the astronomer John Herschel with the help of his 18.7 inch reflector telescope and was later included in his New General Catalog by Johan Dreyer .
