NGC 5982 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E3 in the dragon in the northern sky . It is an estimated 142 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 110,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 5981 and NGC 5985 , it forms the galaxy trio Holm 719 or KTG 64 and is the brightest member of the NGC 5982 group, which still includes NGC 5976 , NGC 5987 and NGC 5989 .
The object was discovered on March 19, 1788 by William Herschel .
