NGC 5997 is a 14.2 mag bright compact elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E0 in the constellation Snake north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 554 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy IC 1137 .
The object was discovered by Albert Marth on March 25, 1865 .
