NGC 3226 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E2 pec in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 55 million light years from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years across. Together with NGC 3227 , it forms the interacting galaxy pair Arp 94 or Holm  187 . In addition, she is a member of the NGC 3227 group ( LGG 194 ), which in turn belongs to the Leo II groups .

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with an elliptical companion on one arm (Arp catalog) .

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3213 , NGC 3222 and IC 610 .

The Type I supernova SN 1976K was observed here.

The object was discovered on February 15, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
