NGC 3240 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sc / a in the constellation Hydra south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 150 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 3233 .
The Type Ic supernova SN 2001M was observed here.
The object was discovered by John Herschel on March 20, 1835 .
