NGC 3247 is an open star cluster and the central OB association of the massive star formation area RCW 49 in the constellation Carina in the southern sky. It is located nearly 20,000 light years from the Sun in the Sagittarius spiral arm of the Milky Way. Overall, NGC 3247 is divided into three areas by dark bands, with the compact star cluster Westerlund 2 on its western edge .
NGC 3247 was discovered by John Herschel on April 1, 1834 .
