RCW 49 is a massive HII region at a distance of around 20,000–23,000 light years , has a diameter of around 350 light years and is located in the constellation Carina . This stellar birthplace is high in dust and contains more than 2,200 stars . Your central OB association is Westerlund 2 .

In RCW 49 there is a physical binary star system whose components orbit each other in around 3.7 days and have masses of around 82 M ʘ and 83 M ʘ . This makes them one of the most massive known stars.
