Gum catalog

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gum catalog is an astronomical catalog of 84 emission nebulae in the southern hemisphere. It was compiled at the Mount Stromlo Observatory by the Australian astronomer Colin Stanley Gum (1924-1960) from data based on wide-angle photography .

Gum published his work in 1955 in a study entitled A study of diffuse southern H-alpha nebulae , which was a compilation of 84 nebulae or associations of nebulae. Similar compilations are the Sharpless catalog and the RCW catalog , whereby a corresponding number of objects are also listed in these.

The Gum Nebula is named after Colin Stanley Gum , who also discovered it and has the number 12 in the Gum catalog; this is an emission nebula in the southern constellations sails of the ship and aft deck of the ship .
