NGC 6334 , engl. sometimes Cat's Paw Nebula (Engl. Cat's Paw Nebula ) or rarely Bear Claw Nebula (Engl. hogweed mist ), is an emission nebula in the constellation Scorpio. It is about 5,500 light years from the solar system and is estimated to be 50 light years in diameter. The object is one of the most active star formation regions in our galaxy and contains stars up to ten times the mass of the sun that were formed in the last few million years.

discovery

John Herschel discovered the nebula on June 7, 1837 at the Cape of Good Hope and noted it as h 3678 . In the General Catalog , which was later written by Herschel, the emission nebula bears the abbreviation GC 4288 and in the New General Catalog by Johan Ludvig Emil Dreyer , which is based on it, the cat's paw nebula is recorded under NGC 6334 .
