NGC 6342 is a globular cluster in the constellation Serpent Bearer , 27,700 light years away .
The star cluster was discovered on May 28, 1786 by William Herschel with the help of an 18.7 inch telescope and was later included in his New General Catalog by Johan Dreyer .
