In 1956/57 he was the state chairman of the Liberal Student Union of Hesse and since 1961 he has been a member of the state board of the Young Democrats of Hesse. Wolf-Erich-Kellner-Gedächtnisstiftung and Wolf-Erich-Kellner-Stiftung

In 1964, his father Otto Kellner set up the Wolf-Erich-Kellner Memorial Foundation in memory of Wolf Erich Kellner . It is administered in trust by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and has been awarding the Wolf-Erich-Kellner Prize every year since 1966 .

In 1965 Otto Kellner established the dependent "Wolf-Erich-Kellner-Foundation" at the Philipps University of Marburg because his son had received his doctorate in 1960 at the Philipps University of Marburg. In 2005, the University Presidium abolished this foundation. Since then, "with the greatest possible consideration of the founder's will, the funds that have accrued up to this point in time have been used for an annual award for an excellent thesis (dissertation, master's thesis, master's thesis or state examination thesis) in medieval history until they are used up."
