NGC 3227 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 48 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 60,000 ly. Together with NGC 3226 , it forms the interacting galaxy pair Arp 94 or Holm  187 .

The galaxy is named after the NGC-3227 group, which in turn belongs to the Leo II groups .

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with an elliptical companion on one arm (Arp catalog) .

The galaxies NGC 3213 , NGC 3222 and IC 610 are located in the same area of the sky .

The Type Ia supernova SN 1983U was observed here.

The object was discovered on February 15, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel . Herschel already recognized that NGC 3227 forms a double nebula with NGC 3226 .
