PGC 50584 = Arp 79 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB (s) bc in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky . It is around 245 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 90,000 light years . The object is also unofficially called “ NGC 5490C ” because it is close to the galaxy NGC 5490 and an interaction between the two galaxies is being considered.

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a large companion of high surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) .
