NGC 5421 , also called NGC 5421A , is a 13.2 mag bright barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB? in the constellation hounds . It has a strong gravitational interaction with the non-NGC object PGC 49949 (also called NGC 5421B ) and forms the pair of galaxies Arp 111 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of elliptical galaxies that repel spiral arms (Arp catalog) .
The galaxy was discovered on June 9, 1880 by Édouard Jean-Marie Stephan .
