NGC 5408 is an irregular galaxy of Hubble type IBm in the constellation Centaurus in the southern sky , which is about 16 million light-years from the Milky Way 's center. Inside the object is the very luminous X-ray source NGC 5408 X-1, a black hole with 2,000 times the mass of our sun .
The object was discovered on June 5, 1834 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
