NGC 5406 is a 12.3 mag bright barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation of the Hounds and about 236 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered on May 16, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflecting telescope, who described it as “F, pL, R, lbM, 1.5 ′ diameter”.
