NGC 5409 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active galaxy core of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky . It is an estimated 279 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 140,000 light years in diameter.

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5416 , NGC 5423 , NGC 5424 , NGC 5431 .

The Type Ia supernova SN 2011is was observed here.

The object was discovered on April 25, 1883 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel .
