NGC 5401 is a 13.7 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Hounds and about 171 million light years from the Milky Way.
It was discovered on May 1, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "vF, vS".
