NGC 5403 , sometimes referred to as the mini-sombrero , is a 13.7 mag bright barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation of the Hounds .
It was discovered on May 16, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "cF, pL, iF". Together with the galaxy UGC 8919 N , which was discovered much later , it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair.
