NGC 5440 is a 12.3 likes bright spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sa in the constellation Canes Venatici. It is an estimated 168 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 110,000 ly. Together with NGC 5441 , it forms the galaxy pair Holm 576 .
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5399 , NGC 5421 , NGC 5444 , NGC 5445 .

The Type Ia supernova SN 1998D was observed here.

The object was discovered on May 1, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "pB, pL, irregularly extended, mbM".
