NGC 5442 is a 13.7 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sb in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 381 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 135,000 ly.
In the same area of ​​the sky are the galaxies IC 4361 , IC 4363 , IC 4364 , IC 4368 .

The Type Ia supernovae SN 2001U and SN 2011bz were observed here.

The object was discovered by Albert Marth on January 11, 1865 .
