NGC 3261 is a barred spiral galaxy of the SBbc type and lies in the constellation Sails of the Ship . It is estimated to be 105 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 120,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 3256 , NGC 3262 , NGC 3263 , among others .
The object was discovered on March 15, 1836 by John Herschel .
