IC 38 is a spiral galaxy with extensive areas of Hubble-type Sbc star formation in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 733 million light years from the Milky Way and about 195,000 ly in diameter. Since it is in almost the same direction and distance as IC 37 , they can be an interacting pair , which also explains the apparent distortion in the structure of IC 38 would. In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 187 , IC 36 , IC 42 .

The property was built on August 25, 1892 by Stéphane Javelle .
