IC 51 = Arp 230 is a lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 79 million light years from the Milky Way and about 30,000 light years in diameter.

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 263 and IC 47 .

The galaxy was later recorded by Halton Arp in his Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies (galaxies with concentric rings) due to its unusual ring structure, which can also be seen well when observed using the Hubble Space Telescope . A more precise classification, as “Good candidate for polar-ring” ( polar ring galaxy ), was published in the early 1990s.

The object was discovered on August 30, 1892 by Stéphane Javelle with what was then the world's largest refractor at the Observatoire de Nice and was later listed in the Index Catalog .
