NGC 7727 = Arp 222 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Aquarius on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 87 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 115,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 7724 , it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair and is the brightest galaxy of the NGC 7727 group ( LGG 480 ).
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of galaxies with amorphous spiral arms .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 7723 .
The object was discovered on November 27, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
