IC 356 = Arp 213 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sb / P in the constellation Giraffe in the northern sky . It is around 46 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 55,000 light years . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class galaxies with irregularities, absorption and resolution .
The property was discovered by Edward Emerson Barnard in 1889 .
