IC 344 is a faint bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Eridanus south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 241 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years across .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1397 , NGC 1417 , NGC 1418 , NGC 1424 .
The Type Ia / P supernova SN 1991bj was observed here.
The object was discovered by John Herschel on October 17, 1827 .
