IC 340 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Eridanus south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 183 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxy NGC 1421 is located in the same region of the sky .
The Type Ic supernova SN 2002jj was observed here.
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on January 1, 1894 .
