NGC 1397 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0-a in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is an estimated 244 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on September 30, 1789 and later listed in the New General Catalog by Johann Dreyer .
