NGC 1379 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Fornax the southern sky . It is an estimated 54 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 40,000 ly. It is listed as a member of the Fornax galaxy cluster under the catalog name FCC 161 .

The galaxies NGC 1374 , NGC 1375 , NGC 1381 , NGC 1387 are in the same area of ​​the sky .

The object was discovered on December 25, 1835 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
