NGC 1356 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Horologium in the southern sky . It is an estimated 520 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 260,000 ly. In the same area of the sky are the galaxies IC 1947 , IC 1950 , IC 1959 , IC 1968 .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on December 23, 1837 .
