NGC 1353 is an active barred spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type SBb in the constellation Eridanus south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 64 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter . In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1362 , NGC 1370 , IC 1953 , IC 1962 .
The object was discovered on December 9, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel with his 47.5 cm reflecting telescope .
