NGC 1398 is a barred spiral galaxy with an active galactic nucleus from Hubble type SBab in the constellation Fornax the southern sky . It is around 58 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 130,000 light years.
The galaxy NGC 1412 is located in the same area of the sky .
The Type Ib supernova SN 1996N was observed here.
The object was discovered on October 9, 1861 by the German astronomer Wilhelm Tempel .
