NGC 1423 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble-type SBbc in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 282 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter .
The type II supernova SN 2005gm was observed here.
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on October 31, 1886 .
