NGC 1436 = NGC 1437 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Eridanus south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 56 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years across . It is listed as a member of the Fornax galaxy cluster under catalog number FCC 290 . The galaxy is a companion to the elliptical galaxy NGC 1427 .

The object was discovered on January 9, 1836 by the astronomer John Herschel with his 47.5 cm reflecting telescope .
