NGC 1399 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E1 in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 58 million light years from the Milky Way and about 135,000 light years in diameter. It is listed as a member of the Fornax galaxy cluster under catalog number FCC 213 , it is one of the largest and brightest galaxies in the cluster and the closest cD galaxy to us .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1382 , NGC 1387 , NGC 1396 , NGC 1404 .

The object was discovered on October 22, 1835 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
