NGC 1404 is an elliptical galaxy with an active galaxy core in the constellation Fornax on the border with the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 82 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years across. It is listed as a member of the Fornax Galaxy Cluster under catalog number FCC 219 .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1389 , NGC 1396 , NGC 1399 , NGC 1408 .

The Type Ia supernovae SN 2007on and SN 2011iv were observed here.

The object was discovered on November 28, 1837 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
