NGC 1407 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E1 in the constellation Eridanus the southern sky . It is an estimated 76 million light years away from the Milky Way , about 105,000 light years in diameter, and is part of the Eridanus Galaxy Cluster .

Together with NGC 1359 , NGC 1440 , NGC 1452 , IC 343 , IC 346 , PGC 13220 , PGC 13241 and PGC 13511 , it forms the NGC 1407 group or LGG 100 .

The object was discovered on October 6, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
