NGC 5544/5 , NGC 5544/45 or Arp 199 , is an interacting pair of two spiral galaxies in the constellation Bootes . The galaxy nuclei are separated by 0 ′, 6. NGC 5545 is located to the east of NGC 5544 and is observed on the edge, running from east-northeast to west-southwest, while the inclination of NGC 5544 is low. Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of galaxies with matter ejected from the nucleus .
William Herschel observed the object on May 1, 1785. Based on his description, it can be assumed that Herschel observed both components. The resulting NGC entry with number 5544 refers to the western of the two galaxies, while the eastern component was to be given a separate number later than 5545. The latter entry is based on an observation by Bindon Blood Stoney on April 10, 1852.
