NGC 5549 is a 13.0 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy with an active galaxy core ( LINER type) of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Virgo . It is estimated to be 344 million light years from the Milky Way and about 165,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered on May 1, 1786 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, which she labeled “Two. Both eF, vS. The place is that of the following. The first precedes the last 3 or 4 ′ ”. The first object is NGC 5546 ; The second named object should be NGC 5549 according to Herschel's notes , but is more like NGC 5542 in terms of position .
