NGC 5559 is a 14.1 mag bright bar-spiral-shaped radio galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Bear Keeper north of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 233 million light years from the Milky Way and about 105,000 ly in diameter.
The object was discovered on April 10, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "vF, lE, S".
