NGC 5519 = NGC 5570 is a 13.4 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 333 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 155,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 5514 , NGC 5528 , NGC 5538 , NGC 5542 , among others .
The object was discovered on January 23, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “vF, forming an arch with 3 sts”. Probably due to a transcription error in Herschel's notes (spelling of the numbers 1 and 7), the observations by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest on April 26, 1865 and by Guillaume Bigourdan on May 13, 1896 under NGC 5519 led to a double entry in the catalog.
