Markarian 809 = NGC 5591 is a merging galaxy pair in the constellation Bootes , which is about 344 million light years from the Milky Way, which is counted among the Markarian galaxies .
The entry NGC 5591 in the New General Catalog goes back to an observation of this object by Lewis Swift on June 4, 1886. At that time he probably only saw the core of the western, brighter galaxy.
