NGC 5609 is a 15.7 mag bright spiral galaxy with pronounced emission lines of the Hubble type "Sa" in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 1.4 billion light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 160,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 5580 , NGC 5613 , NGC 5614 , NGC 5615 .
The object was discovered on March 1, 1851 by Bindon Stoney , an assistant to William Parsons .
