NGC 5581 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E-S0 in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 207 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 50,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy IC 1006 .
The object was discovered by Édouard Stephan on May 6, 1883 .
